Four members of the project team successfully participated in the 29th SETAC Europe Annual Meeting held in Helsinki, 26-30 May, with four presentations: three platform presentations and a poster.

Research conducted within the DEFENSoil project was presented.

In the platform presentation “Biochemical biomarkers opposite effects - characteristics, meaning and methods for proofing” opposite effects of biochemical biomarkers noted in research as well as methods for proving phenomena that differ from the dose-response model were presented. In the presentation “Efflux pump activity in Enchytraeidae” the results of research in which the presence of MXR proteins in enchytreids and their significance as biomarkers of exposure to xenobiotics was presented. In the presentation “Earthworm avoidance behavior quantification using artificial neural networks” an ANN-based system for continuous earthworm monitoring was presented that allows quantification of earthworm behavior directly in the soil.

In the poster “A low cost, real-time measurements of CO2 uptake/emission as an early indicator of exposure to xenobiotics in plants and animals” the functionality of ResTox, a respiratory activity measuring system developed in the DEFENSoil project, was presented. Results of experiments in which CO2 uptake and/or emission was used as an early biomarker of exposure to xenobiotics in earthworms and duckweed were presented.
